Work Visa for Mozambique

Who needs a work visa?

Foreign nationals intending to perform paid employment in Mozambique require a work visa or residence permit with work authorization. Tourist visa holders cannot legally work.

Typical documents

  • Valid passport and application form
  • Employment contract or invitation letter from Mozambican employer
  • Academic and professional certificates (translated if required)
  • Criminal record certificate from country of origin
  • Medical certificate
  • Prior authorization from Ministry of Labour (where applicable)

Employer role

The Mozambican employer must demonstrate the position cannot be filled locally and meet registration obligations with authorities. Foreign companies establishing branches or joint ventures must be legally registered in Mozambique.

Timelines

The process may take 4–12 weeks depending on document completeness and sector. Plan well ahead of your intended start date.

MITESS and work authorization

Foreign work authorization is handled by MITESS (mitess.gov.mz), coordinated with SENAMI for DIRE. Employers must demonstrate need and legal registration.
