Student Visa for Mozambique

Guide for international students — enrollment, documents, timelines, and rules for staying during your studies.

Updated: May 2026 (with official references)

Who needs a student visa?

Foreign nationals admitted to universities, technical schools, or recognized training programs in Mozambique require a student visa or temporary residence authorization for academic purposes.

Tourist visa holders cannot attend long-term courses. Confirmed enrollment at an accredited institution is a fundamental requirement.

Typical documents

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months beyond intended entry date)
  • Admission letter or enrollment certificate from the educational institution
  • Completed visa application form
  • Recent passport-style photographs
  • Proof of financial means for fees, accommodation, and living expenses
  • Proof of accommodation (university residence, rental, or invitation letter)
  • Criminal record certificate from country of origin
  • Medical certificate and proof of vaccination (yellow fever, if applicable)
  • Academic transcripts and previous study certificates (translated if required)

How to apply

Applications are made at a Mozambican consulate or embassy in your country of origin, preferably after receiving a definitive admission letter. Some students already in Mozambique on a valid visa may apply for a change of purpose through Migration Services.

The educational institution may be asked to confirm enrollment with authorities. We recommend starting the process 6–8 weeks before the academic year begins.

Stay duration and work

The student visa covers the duration of the course, subject to annual renewal upon proof of academic progress. Full-time paid employment is not permitted; authorized internship activities arranged by the institution may be accepted.

Where to confirm current requirements

Confirm requirements, fees, and timelines at evisa.gov.mz and at your local Mozambican consulate. Since February 2026, SENAMI operates the official eVisa and eTA platform with VFS Global support.

The Government of Mozambique portal (portaldogoverno.gov.mz) is the official source but is published in Portuguese only — there is no separate English version.

Important note

Indicative information only. Requirements vary by institution and nationality — always confirm with the university, consulate, or legal advisor before you travel.
