Tofo is a fishing village on the Inhambane peninsula in Inhambane province. The National Tourism Institute (INATUR) regulates licensed tour operators in the region, which also covers Praia do Tofo, Barra, and historic Inhambane town.
The main beach stretches for kilometers; the village has lodges, restaurants, and dive centers. Tofo lies about 30 km from Inhambane city and roughly 480 km from Maputo by road.

From June to September (conditions dependent), Tofo is one of the world’s best places to snorkel with whale sharks. Morning boat trips; pack reef-safe sunscreen and flexible expectations; sightings are never guaranteed.
Tofinho and the main beach offer accessible surf peaks; local shops rent boards and give lessons. Pair with coastal boat trips for coves and sunset runs. Check tides and wind with your operator.
About 30 minutes away, Inhambane mixes colonial architecture, a lively market, and landmark places of worship in the centre. Ideal for a half-day: seafood lunch, a Baixa stroll, and return to Tofo by late afternoon.
Barra to the north has more sheltered water and a family feel; Tofinho to the south is laid-back and popular with surfers. Rent a scooter or arrange a transfer; bring water and small notes for beach bars.
Flights land at Inhambane Airport (INH), about 30 minutes from Tofo by road. From Maputo, the drive is roughly 470–500 km (about 5–6 hours in dry season). Roads have improved on the EN1 corridor but a 4x4 helps in the rainy season (November–April).
