The Bazaruto archipelago off Inhambane coast is a protected marine national park since 1971. Five main islands: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Bangue; offer dunes, lagoons, and near-pristine coral reefs.
It ranks among East Africa's most exclusive beach and dive destinations, with luxury lodges and strict conservation rules.

Bazaruto is one of the region’s last dugong strongholds; they feed in seagrass lagoons between the islands. Sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed; book wildlife trips that keep respectful distances on calm mornings.
Benguerra’s dunes, beaches, channels, and seagrass support turtles, dugongs, and migratory species. Watch wildlife from a respectful distance and choose operators that never chase animals.
Inter-island channels concentrate fish schools, reef species, and rays; including mantas at some sites. Best with dry-season visibility; use a well-fitting mask and never feed marine life.
Shallow lagoons and sandbanks are ideal for snorkelling without dive certification. Prefer calm mornings, reef-safe sunscreen, and a vest if currents pick up. Confirm safe spots with your guide.
Luxury lodges on Benguerra and Bazaruto offer full-board packages: meals, diving, fishing, and boat trips. Access is by boat or light aircraft from Vilankulo only.
Day trips from Vilankulo are possible, but island stays allow time to explore lagoons, dunes, and dive sites at a relaxed pace.
