The Bazaruto archipelago off Inhambane coast is a protected marine national park since 1971. Five main islands — Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Bangue — offer dunes, lagoons, and near-pristine coral reefs.
It ranks among East Africa's most exclusive beach and dive destinations, with luxury lodges and strict conservation rules.
Luxury lodges on Benguerra and Bazaruto offer full-board packages: meals, diving, fishing, and boat trips. Access is by boat or light aircraft from Vilankulo only.
Day trips from Vilankulo are possible, but island stays allow time to explore lagoons, dunes, and dive sites at a relaxed pace.
Departure base: Vilankulo (flights or road). Boat transfers arranged by lodges (45 min–2 hrs depending on island). Some operators offer charter flights to island airstrips.
