Maputo is the economic and cultural heart of Mozambique. The city blends art deco and Portuguese colonial architecture with lively markets, marrabenta music, fresh seafood, and a growing creative scene.
It is the ideal starting point for business travel, urban stays before exploring southern beaches, or journeys inland.

The Municipal Market (Mercado Central) is downtown Maputo’s daily pulse: spice stalls, fresh fish, tropical fruit, and crafts. Go in the morning with small notes, and bargain politely to soak up authentic city life.
Fort Nossa Senhora da Conceição on Praça 25 de Junho is one of the city’s main historic landmarks; ramparts, courtyard, and views over the Baixa. Pair it with the Natural History Museum (UEM), known for its neo-Manueline building and Mozambique biodiversity collections.
The coastal strip south of the centre; along Avenida da Marginal and Costa do Sol; is ideal for waterfront walks, bay sunsets, and a string of bars and restaurants. A relaxed late-afternoon escape from downtown traffic.
The Craft, Flower and Gastronomy Fair (FEIMA) brings artisans, flowers, and local food together outdoors. One of the best places for authentic souvenirs and snacks. Check opening days and hours before you go.
Maputo is known for prawns, grilled fish, and fresh seafood. Focus on Polana and the bay waterfront: terraces with a view, catch of the day, and Portuguese–Mozambican flavours. Book ahead on weekends and ask what’s freshest.
Day trips (or weekend escapes) leave the bay for Inhaca Island; beaches, snorkelling, and marine life; and farther south to Ponta do Ouro / Ponta Malongane in the marine reserve. Use an organised boat or transfer and check tides and weather.
The dry season (April–November) offers more comfortable weather for city walks and beach time. December–March is hotter and humid, with possible heavy rains.
