Gorongosa National Park in Sofala province is one of Africa's most ambitious conservation projects. Damaged during civil conflict, the park is being restored with support from the Gorongosa Foundation — reintroducing elephants, lions, antelope, and hundreds of bird species.
It combines savanna, floodplains, miombo woodland, and sacred Mount Gorongosa, creating dramatic landscapes and exceptional biodiversity.
Road from Beira (2–3 hrs) or Chimoio (1.5–2 hrs). Main park access road has improved significantly; 4x4 recommended in rainy season (Nov–Mar).
Occasional charter flights to the park airstrip; most visitors arrive by car or organized transfer from Beira or Maputo.
Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge and in-park camps offer immersive stays. Beira and Chimoio work as day-trip bases, though overnighting in the park maximizes wildlife sightings.
