Banking and Personal Finance

Opening accounts, international transfers, cards, and money management for residents in Mozambique.

Updated: May 2026 (with official references)

Major banks

The banking sector includes BCI, BIM, Standard Bank, Absa, Moza Banco, and others. Maputo has most branches; secondary cities have more limited but basic coverage.

Expatriates use MZN current accounts for local salaries and, where available, USD or EUR accounts for remittances and international payments.

Opening a bank account

The process can take days to weeks. Banks apply strict KYC and source-of-funds rules.

  • Valid passport and visa/residence or work permit
  • NUIT (Unique Tax Identification Number)
  • Proof of address (lease or employer letter)
  • References or letter from employer (often required)
  • Minimum initial deposit — varies by bank

Transfers and exchange

SWIFT transfers in and out of the country are subject to documentation and exchange controls. Central and commercial banks publish official rates; the informal (parallel) market operates with different spreads — use legal channels.

Services such as Wise, Western Union, and MoneyGram operate in Maputo and major cities. Compare fees, timelines, and limits before sending large amounts.

Cards and daily payments

  • Debit and credit cards — accepted at major supermarkets and hotels
  • Multicaixa (ATM) — available in cities; check international fees
  • M-Pesa, e-Mola, and Mkesh — mobile money widely used for local payments
  • Cash still essential at markets, chapas, and small vendors

Essential services for residents

Maintain valid DIRE (SENAMI), NUIT (AT), and registered contracts. Public health via MISAU; education via MINEDH. Forex regulated by the Bank of Mozambique.

Tips for expatriates

Banking regulation and documentation requirements change — confirm current procedures directly with your chosen bank.

  • Keep an account in your home country for investments and emergencies
  • Save bank statements for visa renewal and tax declarations
  • Avoid carrying large cash amounts — use documented transfers
  • Consult an accountant on foreign account reporting if applicable
