Internet and SIM in Mozambique

Mobile operators, data packages, home fiber, and connectivity for remote work.

Updated: May 2026 (with official references)

Mobile operators

The three main operators are Vodacom, Movitel, and TMcel. 4G coverage is reasonable in Maputo, Beira, Nampula, and along main roads; rural areas rely mainly on 3G or patchy signal.

Buy a SIM at official kiosks or operator stores with passport or ID. SIM registration is mandatory — avoid unregistered SIMs.

Mobile data packages

Speeds vary by time and location. Test coverage at your home and office before committing to a long-term plan.

  • Daily, weekly, and monthly packages via USSD or operator apps
  • Data + minutes + SMS combos — compare price per GB
  • Regional roaming available but expensive — disable if not needed
  • Phone hotspot is a common initial solution for remote work

Home fixed internet

  • Fiber available in selected Maputo neighborhoods (Vodacom, Movitel, local ISPs)
  • Radio/VSAT internet where fiber is absent — more expensive, useful inland
  • Installation may require a 12-month contract and activation fee
  • Mobile backup recommended — power cuts affect fixed routers

Remote work and VPN

Enough bandwidth for video calls exists in urban areas with good coverage, but latency and instability can occur. A router with UPS or battery helps during EDM outages.

Corporate VPN generally works; confirm security policies with your employer. Avoid unsecured public Wi-Fi for sensitive data.

Essential services for residents

Maintain valid DIRE (SENAMI), NUIT (AT), and registered contracts. Public health via MISAU; education via MINEDH. Forex regulated by the Bank of Mozambique.

Practical tips

Prices and packages change frequently — confirm current offers directly with the operator.

  • Top up airtime or data in advance — night-time recharge can fail
  • Save operator USSD codes for balance checks
  • Consider two SIMs from different operators for redundancy
  • Ask landlord or condominium about included internet before renting
