MINEDH, provincial education directorates, and guidance for verifying educational establishments in Mozambique.
Updated: May 2026
Mozambique's education system is regulated by the Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH), which defines curriculum, school calendar, teacher training, and access policies for public basic, secondary, and higher education.
Each province has a Provincial Directorate of Education and Human Development (DPEDH) supervising public schools, enrollment, and local infrastructure.
International and private schools exist mainly in Maputo, Beira, and other cities — often with British, Portuguese, or South African curricula. This directory does not list private schools; it presents the ministry and verification guidance.
Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH)
National education authority
Public institution
Central body responsible for education policy, national curriculum, teacher training, public higher education, and literacy and school inclusion programs nationwide.
Provincial MINEDH representation responsible for enrollment, local school calendar, inspection of public schools, and coordination with educational units in Maputo City.
Each province has an equivalent DPEDH — contact MINEDH for your area's delegation.
Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM)
Reference public university
Public institution
Mozambique's main public university, with campus in Maputo and units in other cities. Offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs across diverse fields.
Expatriate families often seek private international schools. Mozambique does not maintain a central public register of private schools — verification is the parents' responsibility.
Public schools: confirm enrollment with provincial DPEDH and MINEDH calendar
Private/international schools: request operating license and curriculum accreditation from the establishment
Verify whether the curriculum (Cambridge, IB, Portuguese, etc.) is recognized in your destination country if planning repatriation
Visit facilities, confirm teacher qualifications and safety policies
Request references from other expatriate families and embassy communities
For higher education, confirm institution recognition with MINEDH
Disclaimer
This directory does not individually list international or private schools. The existence of foreign-curriculum schools in Maputo and other cities does not imply Mozambique Discovery endorsement.
Enrollment requirements, fees, and calendars vary. Always confirm information directly with MINEDH, provincial DPEDH, or the chosen school before financial commitments.
