Southern beaches

The south offers beaches within straightforward reach of Maputo: dunes, surf, bay day trips, and a wide choice of accommodation and dive operators.

Ponta do Ouro

Surf, dunes, and a relaxed atmosphere in Mozambique’s far south. The marine reserve protects reefs; ideal for snorkelling, weekends from Maputo, and beach walks. Check tides before you go.

Tofo and Barra

Standout diving, seasonal whale sharks (Jun–Sep), and lodges along the bay. Tofo concentrates dive schools; Barra is calmer. Book accredited centres and use reef-safe sunscreen.

Inhaca and Portuguese Island

Day trips from Maputo: Inhaca for beach and snorkel; Portuguese Island as a bay nature reserve. Boats leave from Cais do Pescadores; schedules follow the tides.

Xai-Xai

A long family-friendly beach about 200 km north of Maputo on the EN1. A solid first coastal stop with less logistics than the islands. Confirm swim zones with your lodge.

Central beaches

The central coast is known for clear water and Bazaruto Archipelago National Park; ideal for dhow trips, snorkelling, and seaside stays.

Mainland base for Bazaruto Archipelago National Park: clear water, dhow trips, and coastal lodges. Overnight onshore with an island day trip, or book an island lodge with transfer.

East coast of Bazaruto Island

Bazaruto and Benguerra

White-sand beaches in a national park; reefs, turquoise water, and luxury lodges. Limited capacity: book months ahead and respect conservation fees.

Palm trees on the Inhambane coast

Inhambane and Morrungulo

Palm-lined coast and a slower pace than Tofo: historic town, fresh fish, and neighbouring beaches. Ideal for quiet days and coastal culture.

Northern beaches

The north requires more logistics (flights, boats) but rewards with remote islands, UNESCO heritage, and exceptional marine biodiversity.

Sand, baobabs, and the gateway to northern diving. Lodges along the beach; Pemba links by domestic flight to Maputo. Check advisories before planning Quirimbas.

Remote islands with clear water and exclusive lodges (e.g. Quilálea). Requires boat or charter from Pemba; and official security advisories.

Nacala

Deep bay and less-explored coast north of Nampula. Best for calm away from classic circuits; book lodging and transfers ahead.

Planning and safety

Follow safe-travel guidance from the National Tourism Institute (INATUR). Keep approved travel authorization or visa, yellow fever vaccination if required, and adequate travel insurance.

Practical tips

  • Dry season (May–Nov) best for calm seas along the coast
  • Book accommodation ahead in high season (Jul–Aug, Dec)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen in marine parks
  • Cash useful in fishing villages; cards at resorts
  • Do not photograph people (especially children) without explicit consent
