Main island destinations

Mozambique's Indian Ocean islands range from UNESCO heritage sites to national-park archipelagos. The National Tourism Institute (INATUR) regulates tourism activity in protected marine and coastal areas, including Bazaruto and Quirimbas national parks.

Ilha de Moçambique (Nampula province) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; historic fortifications combined with accessible mainland stays. The Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos require boat or charter flights from Vilankulo and Pemba respectively.

Boat trips and reefs

Dhows and speedboats leave Vilankulo for day trips and snorkelling on protected reefs. Use licensed operators, reef-safe sunscreen, and respect park conservation fees.

Quirimbas archipelago

Dozens of islands off Cabo Delgado, many within Quirimbas National Park; heritage, reefs, and more remote stays.

Ibo Island and heritage

Ibo blends forts and historic architecture with boutique lodges. The cultural base of the Quirimbas; walk the streets, visit the fort, and pair with beach time. Typically reached via Pemba plus boat.

Remote islands and reefs

Quilálea, Vamizi, and others offer exclusivity and intact reefs. Require advance booking and Cabo Delgado advisories. Ideal for luxury, snorkelling, and seclusion.

Southern and central islands

Closer to Maputo and the mainland coast; good options for day trips and land-based combinations.

Inhaca and Portuguese Island

Day trips from Maputo: Inhaca for mangroves, beaches, and snorkel; Portuguese Island as a bay nature reserve. Boats leave Cais do Pescadores; tide-dependent schedules. A budget-friendly island feel without flying north.

UNESCO: forts, Swahili–Portuguese culture, and urban beaches. More accessible than remote archipelagos; combine with Nampula and one or two nights on the island.

Between Inhambane and Vilankulo, dhows and less-visited islets offer a slower pace. Ideal for pairing a mainland stay with local boat outings.

  • Luxury and privacy: Benguerra, Quilálea, Vamizi

Planning and safety

Follow safe-travel guidance from the National Tourism Institute (INATUR). Keep approved travel authorization or visa, yellow fever vaccination if required, and adequate travel insurance.

Practical tips

  • Book lodges months ahead; very limited capacity
  • Confirm boat/air transfers included in package
  • National parks require fees and conservation rules
  • Bring seasickness medication if sensitive to boats
  • Check advisories for Quirimbas (Cabo Delgado) before booking
  • Do not photograph people (especially children) without explicit consent
