Best Islands in Mozambique

Archipelagos, historic islands, and remote Indian Ocean paradises.

Updated: May 2026 (with official references)

Bazaruto archipelago

Mozambique's most famous island destination: five islands protected as a national park. Benguerra and Bazaruto host luxury lodges; Magaruque and Santa Carolina offer day trips and seclusion.

Best for: diving, dugongs, fishing, and premium stays. Access via Vilankulo.

Quirimbas archipelago

32 islands off Cabo Delgado, many within Quirimbas National Park. Ibo blends historic heritage with boutique lodges; Quilálea and Vamizi are ultra-luxury benchmarks.

Best for: exclusivity, intact reefs, culture-beach combination. Access via Pemba.

Southern and central islands

More accessible than remote archipelagos; good options to combine with mainland stays.

  • Inhaca — popular day trip from Maputo, beaches and snorkelling
  • Portuguese Island — nature reserve in Maputo Bay
  • Ilha de Moçambique — UNESCO, forts, and Swahili-Portuguese culture
  • Ilha do Chocuane — between Inhambane and Vilankulo, less visited

Choosing the right island

  • Limited budget: Inhaca, Bazaruto day trips, Ilha de Moçambique
  • Diving and marine life: Bazaruto, Quirimbas, Inhaca
  • Luxury and privacy: Benguerra, Quilálea, Vamizi
  • History and culture: Ilha de Moçambique, Ibo
  • First visit: Bazaruto (simplest logistics)

Practical tips

  • Book lodges months ahead — very limited capacity
  • Confirm boat/air transfers included in package
  • National parks require fees and conservation rules
  • Bring seasickness medication if sensitive to boats
  • Check advisories for Quirimbas (Cabo Delgado) before booking
