First trip to Mozambique: five decisions that matter

From visa to coastal route — a mental checklist for first-time visitors.

June 2026

1. Confirm your visa early

Most visitors need electronic travel authorisation or a visa before departure. Use the official portal and pick the correct category (tourism, business, transit). Keep digital proof and a printout.

2. Pick a region — do not try to see everything

Mozambique is large. For a first 10–14 day trip, pair Maputo with one beach hub (Tofo/Inhambane or Vilankulo/Bazaruto) or focus north (Pemba/Quirimbas). Overland legs eat days quickly.

3. Realistic transport

Domestic flights connect Maputo to Beira, Nampula, and Pemba — book early. Between cities, chapas and buses are slow; car hire needs attention to road conditions and insurance.

4. Markets and local culture

Include a craft market and, if you can, a live music night. In the trip planner, tick flea markets and handicraft markets to anchor these experiences in your itinerary.

5. Health and safety

Check travel health guidance (malaria, yellow fever by origin). Avoid night driving outside cities. See our safety and travel guides for detail.
