Currency and payments

The official currency is the Metical (MZN). USD and South African Rand are widely accepted in tourist areas. Credit cards work at hotels, lodges, and main restaurants; cash is essential in villages and markets.

Exchange at banks and authorized bureaus; avoid street changers. ATMs available in Maputo, Beira, Inhambane, and larger towns.

Accommodation (per night)

  • Budget (guesthouse, dorm): 800–2,500 MZN (12–40 USD)
  • Mid-range (3* hotel, beach lodge): 3,000–8,000 MZN (45–125 USD)
  • Luxury (island resort, safari lodge): 15,000–50,000+ MZN (230–780+ USD)
  • High season (Jul–Aug, Dec–Jan): +30–50% at popular destinations

Transport

  • Domestic flights Maputo–Inhambane/Vilankulo: 150–350 USD one way
  • Intercity chapa (minibus): 200–800 MZN per leg
  • 4x4 car rental: 3,000–6,000 MZN/day + fuel
  • Private transfer Maputo–Tofo: 4,000–8,000 MZN
  • Maputo city taxi: 300–800 MZN for short rides

Meals and activities

Island and safari packages often include meals and activities — compare total value, not just nightly rate.

  • Local meal (prato do dia): 300–600 MZN
  • Tourist restaurant: 800–2,000 MZN per person
  • Diving (2 tanks): 4,000–8,000 MZN
  • Bazaruto dhow day trip: 5,000–12,000 MZN
  • National park entry / conservation fees: 500–2,000 MZN
